RSVP for February 2023 Meeting

Wednesday, February 22, 6:30 -8:00 pm PT Live/ZOOM
Co-presented by CWCM and Mill Valley Public Library

Our most intriguing stories deal strongly in character. Our best plots hinge on character development. This truth extends through fiction, non-fiction and memoir. Thus, the grasp of a good method for visualizing and creating character can prove essential to crafting tales that manifest meaning while also moving readers. Achieving catharsis to any real degree depends upon it.

Join CWC Marin President Daniel Bacon at the beautiful Mill Valley Public Library for an interview with former San Francisco Chronicle Outdoors reporter Paul McHugh. Since his late teens, he’s published poetry, four novels and three non-fiction works including GGNRA’s Official Guide to Alcatraz. His newest novel, Splinter (a WWII adventure/romance set in Norway amid the Nazi occupation), will be released by Bronzeville Books in May. He makes his home on the Peninsula, where he can often be spotted cruising breaks, on the hunt for highly surfable waves.

This in-person/Zoom meeting is free for all participants.

  • In-person participants: Reserve a seat at millvalleylibrary.libcal.com/event/9836238
  • In order to attend virtually, please RSVP for Zoom information by filling out this form. Registered CWC guests will receive the Zoom link one week before and on the day of the event.

Topic: Finding Your Voice – Member Panel Discussion

Voice is about establishing our personalities as writers and connecting with readers through our writing style. Our tools include tone, verb tense, point of view (first, second, and third-person pronouns), and more. How we use these tools is important because it shapes what we are saying and why.

Do you have advice for others, or do you want to share your challenges?

Our October meeting will kick off with three diverse approaches to Voice and Point of View, provided by panelists selected from our own writing community. We will then open it up to discussion from the audience. We hope many of you will want to be active participants.

Members: RSVP here.

Only $5 for Non-Members.

RSVP for September 2022 Meeting

Tobi Doyle will be speaking on Wednesday, September 28th, at 6 pm.

Topic: Book Mapping – Be Your Own Developmental Editor

A book map is a “big picture” overview of a book, broken down chapter by chapter and scene by scene, usually in the form of a table. It allows you to look objectively at an entire story, all at once.

In this workshop, you will learn:
• to determine which elements to track in your book map
• to find and fix problems with plot, character, theme, etc.
• to use book mapping as a tool throughout story development
• to be your own developmental editor
• to work collaboratively with others to identify areas for improvement
• about the many resources available to help with your writing projects

About the Speaker

Tobi Doyle, a hybrid romance author, has published over a dozen HEAs with heat and humor, romantic suspense, and cozy mysteries. Tobi is a content developer for the RWA’s Pen to Paper Guide to Writing Romance program, and the President of RWA’s romantic suspense/mystery chapter, Kiss of Death. She’s a partner of the Intensive Genre Writers along with SG Redling, where they provide genre writers a writing craft foundation through workshops and retreats. You can find her at TobiDoyle.com and AskIGW.com, but really, usually she’s at her desk contemplating if it’s margarita time yet.
