Write what you know! California is an inspiring place, filled with diversity, beauty,
and history. Learn how your fellow Marin writers are tapping into the richness of our Golden State home.

Writing California is a panel discussion co-hosted by the Mill Valley Public Library. It will take place in the Library’s beautiful Creekside Room.

The panel will feature fiction authors Daniel Bacon, John Byrne Barry, Susanna
Solomon, and moderator Joanne Orion Miller – all published writers using California as their inspiration.

RSVP for August 2023 Meeting

Topic: August Social Soiree (Members-Only)

Sunday, August 13th, 7:00-8:30 pm

Join us at the beautiful San Rafael home of CWC Marin President Daniel Bacon for an evening of socializing and sharing our work. We can’t wait to get to know you better.

Registered participants will have five minutes each to read their work. It can be an excerpt from your book, an essay, a poem, whatever you like (750 words or less). The first ten respondents will be guaranteed a chance to read. As ever, you can come just to socialize only, no need to read.

Please bring a drink or hors d’oeuvre to share. Members may bring one guest — please indicate on the RSVP form.

RSVP for July 2023 Meeting

Topic: July Summer Salon

Wednesday, July 19th, 7:00-8:30 pm

Join CWC Marin for an in-person Social / Open Mic / Ask A Question event. Participants will be allocated 5 minutes each to read an excerpt or or blurb, practice your pitch, discuss a writing insight or challenge, showcase cover options, or ask a question. Feedback is optional. The first 10 to respond will be guaranteed an opportunity to share, and others if time allows. Priority is given to members, but the event is open to all. Location will be sent to those who RSVP before the event.

Lisa Tener will be speaking on Wednesday, November 16th, at 6 pm.

Topic: Choosing Your Publishing Path: Traditional, Hybrid, or Self

Choosing how to publish your book can feel overwhelming. In this presentation, you’ll learn:

  • How each path words (roles/responsibilities)
  • the pros and cons of each option
  • tips for choosing based on your vision, goals, platform, budget and skills/interests
  • what traditional publishers and agents are looking for
  • steps to take for each path

Plus, we’ll have plenty of time to answer your specific questions.

About the speaker

Lisa Tener is an award-winning author, book writing and publishing coach, and speaker. Her recent book, The Joy of Writing Journal: Spark Your Creativity in 8 Minutes a Day, won the three prestigious awards including the Nautilus Book Award. Lisa received the Stevie Award for Coach/Mentor and has helped thousands of writers tap into their creativity and publish. Her clients have signed 5- and 6-figure book deals with Hachette, Random House and other top publishers. The stories that keep people on t he edge of their seats and up all night are filled with unexpected twists and turns. By integrating plot Twists, plot Reversals, and moments of heightened Danger (TRDs) at tactically sound moments, your stories will captivate readers with their I-can’t-wait-to-see-what-happens-next unpredictability. When your plot twists come at the right moments, your pace will be quicker and the action more focused, and these are the nuanced, multifaceted books that sell, and that find a devoted readership.

About the Speaker:

Jane K. Cleland writes both fiction and nonfiction, including the multiple award-winning Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries [St. Martin’s & Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine] and the Agatha-award winning best-sellers, Mastering Suspense, Structure & Plot and Mastering Plot Twists [Writer’s Digest Books]. Jane Austen’s Lost Letters, the 14th in her series, will be published in December. She is a member of the full time faculty at Lehman College, part of the City University of New York, a contributing editor for Writer’s Digest Magazine, and the chair of the Wolfe Pack’s Black Orchid Novella Award (BONA) in partnership with Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. She is a frequent workshop leader and guest author at writing conferences, association meetings, and MFA Residencies.
