Only three weeks until our exciting Marin Writes mini-conference on September 22!  We’ve got Constance Hale as plenary speaker, agents and publishers waiting to hear your pitches, and wonderful readers—and a lot of great donations of food and beverages.

The California Writers’ Club is one of the oldest writer’s organizations in continuous operation in the nation. Our members are poets, journalists, essayists, technical writers, and creators of genre and literary fiction, as well as editors, booksellers, and others involved in related fields, all joined together for the common goal of educating ourselves and the community on the craft of writing and publishing.

2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Main Event: Michael David Lukas

Lukas’ bestselling novel The Oracle of Stamboul (Harper Collins 2011) was the “OneBookOneMarin” 2012 selection. He has been a Fulibright Scholar in Turkey, a night-shift proofreader in Tel Avid, and a waiter at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Vermont.

He is a recipient of scholarships from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York Sate Summer Writers’ Institute, Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and Elizabeth George Foundation. He writing has appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal VQR, and Slate, among others. When he is not writing, he teaches creative writing to third and fourth graders at an elementary school.

Opening Act Series: Part One

The 2013-14 “Opening Act” series will begin October 27th at 1:00 pm in advance of our regular monthly meeting.

Part One: Sunday. Oct. 27

“Present to Past and Back Again
The retrospective narrator in fiction and memoir”

This session explores how authors leave the present to explore their own or their character’s past lives. It includes examples from four novels as well a take-home exercise in plotting your own retrospective story.

Our guest speaker is Marin Branch member, Jo Haraf, who has graciously offered to present a two-part discussion on the use of Retrospective in fiction and memoir.
